Renaissance Star Assessments are computer adaptive tests used across K12 schools nationwide to measure reading and math achievement. Renaissance reports that Star Reading is the most widely used reading assessment in K-12 schools, and the tests are nationally normed, meaning your child’s percentile is calculated against grade-level peers across the country rather than a Florida-only sample. More than 50 independent research publications support the Star assessments, and Star Math alone reports performance across dozens of skill domains. There are three assessments in the family: Star Early Literacy for the youngest learners, Star Reading, and Star Math.
Because they adapt, they are nothing like the fixed question booklets most parents remember. Most students finish each subject in 30 minutes or less.
All three Star assessments appear on the Florida Department of Education’s approved list of nationally norm-referenced tests, which means a STAR score report satisfies the annual assessment requirement for Florida scholarship students.
How Computer Adaptive Testing Actually Works
A traditional test hands every student the same fixed questions. Half are too easy for a strong student, half too hard for a struggling one, and most of the testing time tells you nothing.
STAR starts near your child’s grade level and adjusts after every single answer. Right answer, harder question. Wrong answer, easier question. It keeps narrowing until it finds the band where your child is getting some right and some wrong, and then it stops.
Here is the part to tell your child before they start:
They are supposed to miss questions. Every student does. A STAR test that felt a little hard at the end is a test that worked correctly. If your child comes out saying “some of those were really hard,” that is the design doing its job, not a sign that anything went wrong.
This matters most for anxious testers and children with learning differences. A struggling reader on a fixed grade-level test spends the whole session failing at material far above them. On STAR, they spend it working at their actual level.
What Each Test Measures
STAR Reading
Grades K through 12
- Vocabulary and word knowledge
- Applying vocabulary strategies to unfamiliar words
- Comprehension strategies including self-monitoring, predicting, and drawing conclusions
- Constructing meaning from short passages
- Using text structure to support understanding
STAR Math
Grades K through 12
- Numbers and operations, including whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents
- Algebra, including graphing, variables, and solving equations
- Geometry and measurement, including shapes, angles, area, and volume
- Data analysis, statistics, and probability
- Estimation and problem solving
A note on Star Early Literacy. Star Early Literacy is also on the Florida DOE approved list and is technically available for grades K through 3. In practice we would not recommend it past first grade. Once a child is reading connected text, Star Reading gives you a far more useful picture than an early literacy screener does.
How to Read Your Child’s STAR Score Report
Most families open their score report, see four or five different numbers, and have no idea which one matters. Here is what you are actually looking at.
Scaled Score
The foundational number, running from 0 to 1400 for both Reading and Math. It reflects both how many questions your child answered correctly and how difficult those questions were.
Because it uses one continuous scale across every grade, this is the number to watch year over year if you want to see growth.
Grade Equivalent
Written as grade point month, ranging from 0.0 to 12.9 and above. A GE of 3.2 means third grade, second month.
Renaissance is explicit about what this score does and does not mean. A second grader with a GE of 3.2 performed on this test about as well as a typical third grader in their second month would have performed. It does not mean the child is ready for third grade curriculum. It means their skills are above average for second grade.
This is the single most misread number on the report. Please do not use it to choose curriculum.
Reading Level and Lexile Range
STAR Reading returns a Lexile measure and a Zone of Proximal Development, which is a reading range where your child can work with challenge but without frustration.
This is the most immediately usable thing on the whole report. Take that range to the library or to any bookseller that lists Lexile levels and you can pick books that actually fit your child instead of guessing.
Domain Scores
Ranging from 0 to 100, domain scores estimate your child’s mastery of each skill area for their grade level. A domain score of 50 means your child would be expected to answer correctly about half the grade-level items in that domain.
One caution: students are not expected to have mastered grade-level skills early in the year. Read these as a starting point, not a verdict.
Percentile Rank
This is the number scholarship programs and school districts actually look for. It compares your child to other students in the same grade nationally.
- A percentile rank of 62 means your child scored higher than 62 percent of students in that grade nationwide.
- It is not a percentage of questions answered correctly. A 62 does not mean 62 percent right.
- It is not a grade. A 40 is not a failing score, it means your child scored above 40 percent of their peers.
- Percentile ranks are compressed in the middle. A small change in scaled score can move the percentile several points near the average, and barely move it at the extremes.
About the 35th percentile. Most Florida districts and counties treat a percentile rank at or above 35 as demonstrating educational progress, and a score below it can trigger a probationary year with a remediation plan. Worth knowing: the statute governing the annual evaluation itself, Florida Statute 1002.41, does not actually name a percentile. It asks for progress commensurate with the student’s ability. The number 35 comes from Florida Statute 1006.15 and has become the working benchmark districts apply more broadly.
It does not apply to PEP. Step Up PEP has no minimum score requirement. Your child completes an approved test, you upload the report, and that satisfies the requirement. A low percentile does not put a PEP scholarship at risk.

If you are a PEP family, there is genuinely nothing to worry about. PEP has no minimum score requirement. Your child completes an approved test, you upload the report, and you are done.
If you are a home education family filing an evaluation with your school district, the picture is a little different. Districts commonly look for the 35th percentile as evidence of progress, and a score below it can start a conversation about a remediation year. It is not a cliff and it is not common, but you deserve to know it going in. If you would rather not rest the whole year on one test, a portfolio evaluation is an equally valid way to meet the requirement under Florida law, and it is something I do as well.
